Meteorologists pour into west Africa

Article Abstract:

An international team of atmospheric scientists is studying West Africa's weather patterns as part of the African Monsoon Multidisciplinary Analysis (AMMA) project, with an aim of presenting useful forecasts of the region's violent monsoon storms. The data collected could help west Africans cope with the effects of unpredictable storms, like destruction of crops, and could also help meteorologists understand if west African storms develop into the hurricanes that strike the US east coast.

UK Biobank, a 61 million pounds project launched on 13th March 2006, funded by the Medical Research Council and the Wellcome Trust aims to probe the interplay of genetic and environmental factors that cause disease. The primary use of the project is to compare the people who develop disease with those who do not, which would then enable the researchers differentiate into two groups by examining the lifestyle and genetic factors.
