More delays at Mount Graham

Article Abstract:

The Large Binocular Telescope project at Mount Graham, AZ faces an uncertain future due to the dismissal of a plea by the University of Arizona and the US Forestry Service to lift an injunction on construction work at the site by an appeals court in Jul 1995. The injunction came due to a law suit filed by a consortium of environmental groups for conserving an endangered species of red squirrel indigenous to the mountains, despite no evidence of squirrel activity. The recent opposition by the San Carlos Apache Tribe, previously neutral, further complicates the issue. Rep Jim Kolbe plans to introduce legislation resolving the issue.

Drugs institute gives grant for cocaine vaccine

Article Abstract:

The US National Institute on Drug Abuse propose to grant $700,000 to ImmuLogic Pharmaceutical Corporation to conduct animal testing of a vaccine to treat cocaine addiction. The vaccine is a cocaine derivative combined with a carrier protein, the intake of which will make cocaine less gratifying to the recovering addicts. The physiological reactions take place by blocking the psychostimulatory effects of cocaine. However, an increase in the intake of cocaine can undo the effect of the vaccine.
