Multiple introductions of H5N1 in Nigeria: Phylogenetic analysis reveals that this deadly virus first arrived in Africa from different sources

Article Abstract:

The avian influenza virus H5N1 sequences in poultry from two different farms in Lagos state, Nigeria are analyzed to examine the introduction of the virus to Nigeria, which reported the first infections in Africa. It is found that three H5N1 lineages were independently introduced through routes that coincide with the flight paths of the migratory birds, although independent trade import routes cannot be ruled out.

Genesis of a highly pathogenic and potentially pandemic H5N1 influenza virus in eastern Asia

Article Abstract:

Studies to trace the ecological and genetic origin of the highly pathogenic avian influenza H5N1 disease in poultry and its transmission to humans in Asia in 2003-2004 are presented. Findings indicate that domestic and wild ducks in Southern China played a key role in the generation, maintenance and spreading of this virus.
