New challenge to nuclear test facility
Article Abstract:
The Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) is leading a group of 50 environmental organisations set to mount a final court action to stop the construction of the National Ignition Facility (NIF) at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, CA. The Federal District Court in Washington, DC, will be asked for a preliminary injunction to stop building work, with the NRDC arguing that alternatives to the NIF have not been properly considered. The NIF, designed to fire laser beams at pellets of deuterium-tritium to ignite them, is part of the the Department of Energy's Stockpile Stewardship Program for maintaining a nuclear weapons stockpile.

Livermore to get $100m supercomputer
Article Abstract:
A $100-million supercomputer is expected to become operational at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, California, by 1998. The three-teraflops machine with a high memory capacity will be accessible to scientists for both classified-weapon and non-weapon scientific use. The US Energy Department's Accelerated Strategic Computing Initiative aims to reinstate US supercomputing supremacy in laboratories through introduction of supercomputers by the year 2010.
