New voices displace east/west tensions

Article Abstract:

The Centre for Neuroscience Innovation and Technology (ZENIT) has opened on the university campus in Madgeburg, Germany. This facility will complement a group of neuroscience research departments in the Otto von Guericke University of Magdeburg and the Institute for Neurobiology. University neuroscience and medical technology departments will take up half of ZENIT's 5,000 sq mt, with the other half being occupied by five new companies spun off from the university and the Institute for Neurobiology.

Sweden sets ethical standards for use of genetic 'biobanks'

Article Abstract:

The Swedish Medical Research Council (MRC) has published a full set of ethical guidelines relating to the use and control of tissue and health-science information banks, or biobanks. The guidelines emphasize the importance of protecting individual data. UmanGenomics, a private gen-broking company, was founded at the start of the year and conforms with the guidelines. UmanGenomics has sold rights to generate and sell genetic information from a medical bank.
