Oldest fossil record of gliding in rodents

Article Abstract:

A new eomyid fossil was recovered from Enspel near Bad Marienberg in the Westerwald, Rheinland-Pfalz, Germany. The fossil was identified as Eomys quercyi and its age was approximated at 25.8 Myr. It was found preserved in a dorsoventral position, indicating that a feature of its body differs from a generalized rodent. The feature was determined to be the presence of gliding membranes.
