Effects of undernutrition and refeeding on weights of body parts and chemical components of growing Moroccan lambs

Article Abstract:

A study on Moroccan lambs indicated that loss in weight of metabollically active organs, such as liver and kidney, accounts for most of the weight loss during undernutrition. Forty-four lambs were fed with restricted diet to determine the alteration in weight of internal organs and assess the changes in carcass and noncarcass components at pre-determined stages of weight loss. Gain in weight under conditions of ad libitum access to feed was also assessed. At identical slaughter weight, refed lambs had lower fat content in the carcass and noncarcass component than lambs in the control group.

The performance of gilts in a new group housing system: endocrinological and immunological functions

Article Abstract:

Results of a study indicated that group housing systems such as the Hurnik-Morris (H-M) method can be used for rearing gilts without affecting their productive capacity, immune reaction or endocrinological functions. Gilts in the experimental group were reared were placed in the H-M system with six gilts in each pen while those in the control group were housed in traditional pens involving long duration of isolated confinement. Group housing systems, designed after the study of pigs' social behavior, can provide an alternative to the traditional system of intensive housing.
