Relationships between population and habitat characteristics and reproduction of the rare Gentiana pneumonanthe L

Article Abstract:

Relationships among a variety of site and population characteristics and seed and ovule production and seed set have been studied in 17 populations of rare, bumble bee-pollinated self-compatible Gentiana pneumonanthe L., a perennial of the Netherlands. Finding out how important population size and genetic variation are for seed production of a rare plant, when allowing for various habitat parameters possible important for successful reproduction was the object of the study. Plants in small populations are close in reproductive potential per flower, but less seed production and more uncertainty of successful reproduction is found than is found in plants in larger populations. Small-scale sod cutting around remaining reproductive individuals would be the best method to restore small populations.

Implications of Clonal Structure for Effective Population Size and Genetic Drift in a Rare Terrestrial Orchid, Cremastra appendiculata

Article Abstract:

Conservation studies on a rare South Korean orchid emphasize the importance of understanding clonal structure in the species and the role it plays in preventing losses of fitness and genetic diversity.
