Report to Congress lists fiscal year 1991 expenditures for endangered species
Article Abstract:
A Fish and Wildlife Service reports that endangered species conservation expenditures by federal and state agencies totalled $176.8 million in FY 1991. The report gives expenditures for 570 species, or 89% of the species listed as endangered. Seven species received more than half of FY 1991 funding, with the bald eagle heading the list with $24 million. The Florida scrub jay received $19.7 million, the West Indian manatee $15.3 million and the northern spotted owl $12.8 million.

Razorback sucker listed as endangered: a further decline in the Colorado River system
Article Abstract:
The US Fish and Wildlife Service has listed the razorback sucker Xyrauchen texanus among the many freshwater fishes in the Colorado River system threatened by extinction. The move was prompted bynumerous factors, such as low population, little recruitment, dam construction and the introduction of new fish varieties. The declaration also highlights thefragility of the river's fish population, considered as North America's most endemic riverine ecosystem.

Status of endangered species recovery program is detailed in report to Congress
Article Abstract:
The Fish and Wildlife Service's 'Endangered and Threatened Species Recovery Program' report gives an update on the status of 581 animal and plant species found in the US listed as endangered as of Oct 1, 1990. According to the report, 2% of listed flora and fauna are considered extinct, 38% are in decline, while the status of 19%, mostly invertebrates, is unknown. Mammal, bird and plant species are observed to be demonstrating improvements.
