Retrovirus as trigger, precipitator or marker?
Article Abstract:
Recent research has established that a virus may be responsible for insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM). Researchers were able to isolate an endogenous retroviral genome which had not previously been identified from a patient with diabetes, and identified a fragment of one of its proteins as a superantigen. It was assumed that an endogenous retrovirus may be the trigger for IDDM, as there was no direct evidence of the involvement of an exogenous infectious agent. Research must now focus on the precise connection of this endogenous retrovirus-encoded superantigen with diabetes.

A universal register for animal names
Article Abstract:
The creation of a mandatory web register for all new animal names, and the subsequent inclusion of all existing animal names and nomenclature in a single information system is proposed. The register of new zoological names, ZooBank, must be established and administered by the International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature and it would be a web-based and open-access register that covers all taxonomic ranks relevant to the code.

A universal marker for transgenic insects
Article Abstract:
A marker system that can follow gene transfer in most arthropods and certain other phyla is described. Three vectors were constructed based on the Hermes, piggBac and mariner transposons, and were microinjected into Drosophila eggs. The transgenes appear to be stably integrated into the genome.
