Rice in deep water
Article Abstract:
Prolonged submergence has devastating effects on rice production, hence scientists have characterized a major rice gene that confers tolerance to prolonged submergence. The Submergence 1A-1(Sub1A-1) variant of the gene is introduced into local rice varieties subject to seasonal flooding, as well as into elite and semi-dwarf varieties normally grown in intensively irrigated areas that are also vulnerable to flooding.

Sub1A is an ethylene-response-factor-like gene that confers submergence tolerance to rice
Article Abstract:
The identification of a cluster of three genes at the Submergence 1 (Sub1) locus, encoding putative ethylene response factors, is described. The new variety maintains the high yield and other agronomic properties of the recurrent parent and is tolerant to submergence and the cultivation of this variety is expected to provide protection against damaging floods and increase crop security for farmers.

An efflux transporter of silicon in rice
Article Abstract:
An uncharacterized gene, low silicon rice 2 (Lsil2) is described, which is constitutively expressed in the roots, the protein encoded by this gene is localized on the plasma membrane cells in both exodermis and endodermis on the proximal side of the stem cells.
