Room for hope after a chemical defeat
Article Abstract:
The strengths of the Chemical Weapons Convention offer hope to its proponents even after the postponement of its ratification. The opponents' criticism that other signatory countries can impose company inspection is groundless as the treaty assures a hearing in case of protest against inspection. US's influence on the implementation of the treaty, already signed by 63 countries, will be minimized if it fails to ratify it. Embargoes applicable to non-signatories following the enforcement of the treaty can be harmful for chemical company's exports.

US Senate ignores scientific advice in failing to ratify test ban treaty
Article Abstract:
The US Senate has not ratified the Treaty Banning Nuclear Weapons Tests in the Atmosphere in Outer Space and Under Water, 1963. According to Princeton University's professor of public and international affairs, Frank Von Hippel, who advocated the signing of the treaty, the majority of politicians had decided to vote against the ratification before he presented data in favour of ratification.

Test ban treaty faces make or break in the US Senate: A tough time lies ahead for the US administration in its push to achieve the two-thirds Senate majority needed to ratify the treaty banning atomic weapons testing
Article Abstract:
The US Senate is likely to decide the fate of the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty (CTBT) soon, although the Clinton administration is having to overcome strong opposition from Republicans, to get the treaty considered and ratified. The treaty was approved in 1996 by the United Nations General Assembly, but has to be ratified by 44 specified signatories before it can take effect.
