Scramble feeding in jackass penguins: within-brood food distribution and the maintenance of sibling asymmetries

Article Abstract:

The food distribution among asynchronously hatching siblings of the jackass penguin, Spheniscus demersus, favors first-hatched (A) chicks during the relatively immobile infancy period but changes as mobility increases. The increasing food demand and mobility increase competition among two-chick broods. A-chicks obtain more feeding time than their siblings (B-chicks) in all age categories except that of 21-40 days. A-chicks coordinate well and use their weight advantage successfully during scamble feeding. A and B chicks beg for a longer feed time than singletons.

Recognition of burrow's olfactory signature in blue petrels, Halobaena caerulea: An efficient discrimination mechanism in the dark

Article Abstract:

T-maze experiments were conducted on blue petrels to see if they could recognize an olfactory signature of their own nest. It was seen that the ability to smell their own burrow allowed blue petrels to return to the colony at night and find the correct nest.

Acoustic recognition in macaroni penguins: an original signature system

Article Abstract:

The vocal signature in a species of the genus Eudyptes, the macaroni penguin is examined to find whether voice signature would extend to other nest-building penguins. The findings indicate an original and simple signature system in macaroni penguins.
