Sexual identity and smut
Article Abstract:
The mating-type genes of the common corn smut 'Ustilago maydis,' a type of fungus, revealed a structure in which one locus controls complementary pairs of pheromones and receptors while another locus with several alleles controls two linked subfunctions for each allele. Regine Kahmann and colleagues also found that these alleles take part in self/nonself recognition, an essential phase of sexual reproduction in eukaryotic organisms including fungi. Reproduction in 'Ustilago' is another example of linkage disequilibrium.
