Single odorant molecules?

Article Abstract:

A. Menini, C. Picco and S. Firestein fail to account for non-linear current generation, intrinsic transduction noise and other factors in their supposition that quantal activation is responsible for olfactory transduction. The theory that individual odorant molecules are detected by vertebrate olfactory receptors rather than that intrinsic transduction noise is responsible for the increase in response is not backed by their data which shows more than doubling in response to doubled molecules.

Mechanism of odorant adaptation in the olfactory receptor cell

Article Abstract:

The adaptational mechanism in intact olfactory cells is investigated through the use of a combination of odorant stimulation and caged cAMP photolysis. Odorant- and cAMP-induced responses indicated that adaptation occurs entirely downstream of the cyclase. A modulation of the cAMP-gated channel by Ca2+ feedback is determined as the principal mechanism underlying odorant adaptation.

Odorant receptors make scents

Article Abstract:

Olfaction, which is non-recognized at an elaborate sensory system, deploys a large family of odorant receptors to analyze the chemical environment. The complex process of interaction between the odorant receptors reveals that they act as bidirectional chemical detectors and determine the function of sensory neurons.
