Social organization in northern bottlenose whales, Hyperoodon ampullatus: not driven by deep-water foraging?
Article Abstract:
Research is presented concerning the influence of the deep-diving behavior of northern bottlenose whales on the evolution of sociality. The associations formed between different age groups of animals are discussed.

Alliances I. How large should alliances be?
Article Abstract:
The distribution of alliance sizes that occur from different assumption regarding how males compete and cooperate were examined using individual-based models in which alliances with greater net competitive ability outcompete those with less, and males can switch between alliances based on their expected success is discussed. Observations reveal that alliances were quite dynamic except when a cost of switching alliances was introduced.

Marine protected area design and the spatial and temporal distribution of Cetaceans in a submarine canyon
Article Abstract:
Spatial and temporal distribution of Cetaceans have been studied in the largest submarine canyon off the eastern coast of Canada with emphasis on its potential use for a protected area and on design of such an area. Distribution of the cetaceans was correlated most strongly with depth, but was correlated significantly with month and sea-surface temperature. A year-round marine protected area appears to be needed for this canyon with a core protection zone based on depth and bounded by the 200-m isobath. A buffer zone would be needed around the core zone.
