Still poles apart on reversals?
Article Abstract:
Geomagnetic reversals, the shifts in the polarity of Earth's magnetic field that occur periodically, may involve the movement of the Earth's dipole or virtual geomagnetic pole (VGP) along meridional paths. Langereis and colleagues suggest that the reversals may be artefacts of the pre- and post-reversal locations of the VGP. Furthermore, C. Constable demonstrates that stable field VGPs have persistently moved along two longitudinal bands instead of having paths spread uniformly around the geographical North Pole. Hence the magnetic field probably favors certain orientations in space.

Storm in a lava flow?
Article Abstract:
Observation of the lava flows at Steens Mountain, Oregon, suggests that the Earth's magnetic field changes very rapidly when it is in a disturbed state while undergoing a process of reversal from one polarity to another. The magnetic field of the 16.2-million-year-old lava flows at Steens Mountain, which locked up when the mass cooled through the Curie point, displayed a change of about 6 degrees per day. Although many believe these changes may be due to magnetic storms, the 80-degree jump observed is unlikely to coincide with magnetic storms.

Critical time for fluid dynamics
Article Abstract:
Issues are presented concerning the development of a model of the Earth's molten outer core through the creation of a homogeneous fluid dynamo. The use of the model to study the turbulence of the Earth's core is discussed.
