Tension and relaxation in space-station science

Article Abstract:

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) is faced with major risks with its plan for involvement in an international space station. Costs are likely to increase, and there will be technological challenges. The space shuttle will have little function if there is no space station. Spending on the space station has been criticized from a scientific perspective. The science program of the space station is not backed by many science organizations, but there is little guarantee that science would benefit from funds saved if the program were canceled.

Another piece of paper without force

Article Abstract:

The significance of the signing of the Strategic Arms Reduction Talks (Start) II treaty between Russia and the US in Jan 1993 will not be clear until the remaining states of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) have signed it. The Start I agreement signed in 1992 has not yet been approved and the CIS has yet to schedule a meeting in Minsk. CIS countries have been quick to appropriate Russian equipment left within their borders even though a number have vowed they do not want to be free-standing nuclear powers.

US deal buys into Mir to keep Russia on board international station project

Article Abstract:

Russian and US space officials have reached an agreement that allows Russia to meet its financial commitments to the international space station project while keeping its Mir station functional. By taking on some of the costs of resupplying Mir, US hopes to enable Russia to pay for the launch vehicles that are needed to build the station. NASA officials are apprehensive about future money problems jeopardizing the partnership. Benefits arising from such an agreement are also discussed.
