The call of South Africa

Article Abstract:

South Africa has allocated about six million hectares for conservation; indigenous species are being nurtured among public and private reserves. The animal kingdom in this region has been gradually increasing. However, a rinderpest epidemic in 1896 triggered a 40-year campaign against the tsetse fly which resulted in the destruction of thousands of wild animals. Wildlife recovery began in the 19th century by Paul Kruger. Some animals facing extinction were restored by the 1940s. South Africa boasts over 10,000 private game farms and 350 government reserves, national parks and forests.

Campaigns to save Canadian seals, African elephants and the world's whales seem to be ignored, as slaughter of these animals continue at a rapid pace. Animal advocates are currently focusing on maintaining public awareness on the issue and encouraging political players to join in their campaign.
