The ends of an era

Article Abstract:

An American Geophysical Union conference held in Jun 1998 discussed the climate processes that may provide an explanation for temperature swings of up to 10 degrees C taking place several thousand years apart over most of the Earth's surface. Discussions reflected the fact that palaeoclimatologists are just beginning to understand the full significance of sudden changes in climate. Some scientists challenged the traditional view centred on the North Atlantic by indicating that the tropical Pacific could have been involved in climate changes.

Joint actions may hold the vital formula

Article Abstract:

Developing and wealthy nations attending the 1997 United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change in Kyoto, Japan, may be able to come to a mutually-agreeable decision on greenhouse gas emission targets. The US could reduce emissions by supporting hydro-electric power production in Guatemala. Emissions trading is a complex, though feasible, concept. However, many difficulties stand in the way of an effective worldwide emissions trading programme.

A global call to arms

Article Abstract:

A seminal report on climate change presented by Nicholas Stern at the Royal Society in London states that adverse effects of climate change are unavoidable. Stern's decisive conclusions demand the world's attention as he states that it is imperative to control climate change and the investment needed for this purpose is small compared with the costs of allowing it to continue unabated.
