The impact of helpers

Article Abstract:

The monogamous mating system in callitrichid primates is destabilized as helping behavior acquires a consistent pattern. The female benefits less from roving-male polygamy. The inability of satellite males to acquire breeding females is the main reason for the evolution of polyandrous groups. The mating behavior of these primates is largely dependent on environmental conditions affecting female survival and birth rates. The experimental procedure used to analyse primate behavior is discussed.

Dominance and mating success: a reply to Barton and Simpson

Article Abstract:

The relationship between dominance and mating success in primates is investigated. The definition of dominance rank should not be confused, for it is the outcome of relative male fighting ability and its determinants. Moreover, the use of absolute difference in mating success between males of adjacent rank is statistically sound. This is supported by the observation thathigh-ranking males monopolize matings only when they have fewer than 4 rivals in the group.
