Timely lessons in investment from a wealthy 'wonk': President Bill Clinton's budget proposal contains an important message for governments that are tempted to undervalue basic science
Article Abstract:
The Clinton administration has proposed additional investment of $2 billion in the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the Department of Energy and the National Science Foundation, following years of lukewarm support for basic scientific research. The main initiative when Clinton came to power in 1993 was the Advanced Technology Program at the Department of commerce, but now Clinton is showing that if money spent on science is distributed wisely and fairly, it can win public approval.

Budget cuts threaten Israeli science jobs
Article Abstract:
The Israeli government's decision to slash national budget, and the resultant lack of money for research subsidies pose a threat to jobs for scientists. Funding for existing and proposed job-creation programmes will be based strictly on their merit and utility and will be regularized by a specially appointed committee. Immigrant scientists, who initially worked in academics or private sectors, may lose their jobs or work simply as research assistants if deprived of government funds.
