True navigation by an amphibian

Article Abstract:

Eastern red-spotted newts, Notophthalamus viridescens, which are displaced from their home ponds are found to be able to retrace the homeward direction, indicating the capability of their true navigation. The newts are deprived of visual, magnetic, olfactory and inertial directional information during displacement from their home ponds. Newts are able to use the map information available at a testing site to find the home direction.

Magnetic compass orientation is eliminated under near-infrared light in the eastern red-spotted newt Notophthalmus viridescens

Article Abstract:

Magnetic compass orientation in eastern red-spotted newts is related to the availability of visible light. Shoreward magnetic orientation of newts was studied under normal light conditions and under near-infrared conditions. Results indicated that in the absence of visible light newts are unable to obtain directional orientation from the earth's magnetic field.

Evidence for the use of magnetic map information by an amphibian

Article Abstract:

Research describing the use of magnetic field information by amphibians is presented. In particular orientation experiments with eastern red-spotted newts, Notophtalmus viridescens, are investigated.
