U.K. astronomers hit out at funding council
Article Abstract:
British astronomers lament over the fact that the funding for projects devoted for particle physics and astronomy was eliminated with the demise of the Science and Engineering Research Council (SERC) which was replaced by Particle Physics and Astronomy Research Council (PPARC). This was revealed following the seven million pound sterling reduction of funds for the ground-based astronomy program in favor of the new joint telescope project, 'Gemini' with the U.S., Canada and South American countries.

Industrial world is unlikely to meet promised carbon cuts
Article Abstract:
A survey shows that the industrialized nations may fail to reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from fossil fuels to the 1990 levels, as agreed under the 1993 United Nations climate convention, Rio de Janeiro. The emission rise in developing nations, which are not bound by the convention, is three times that of the industrialized world. Due to poor economic conditions in the former Soviet Union, and central and eastern Europe, the CO2 emission levels decreased to below the 1990 levels.

Chemical weapons ban edges to realization
Article Abstract:
The British government has published draft legislation to ratify the Chemical Weapons Convention and with it prospects for a world wide ban on chemical weapons seems brighter. Anthony Nelson, UK trade minister, said that Britain is committed to signing the convention. UK is one of the key participants to the convention which was signed in Paris, France in January 1993. Though the US and Russia are also signatory to the convention, they are yet to ratify it.
