US politics: campaigns as usual
Article Abstract:
The Republican and Democratic platforms lack specifics on science and technology policy and on improving the US economy. The Democrats and Bill Clinton favor shifting money from defense to research and education, cutting capital gains taxes and raising taxes on the rich. The Republicans and George Bush espouse the importance of the family and of increasing productivity by investing in research but fail to explain where the money for such investment would come from. The reluctance of the candidates to enunciate policies in greater detail is causing the campaign to degenerate into mud-slinging.

Who should fund basic technology?
Article Abstract:
Much attention is being paid to public investment in research in the US to boost competitiveness. The search for consensus on renewed growth in government research spending has been driven by the backlash from the extreme positions of conservatives in the 104th Congress, and compelling pressures to define the role of government in commercially relevant research.
