US researchers push network of massive spectrometers
Article Abstract:
An informal group of US scientists has proposed a plan for 10 regional laboratories equipped with nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectrometers. They believe that high-field NMR will become and important research tool for biologists, materials scientists and geneticists. They are calling for funds of $110 million initially, with a further $150 million later for upgrading. Many universities have NMR spectrometers operating at 300 and 400 MHz, but the scientists want spectrometers that can measure proton resonance at 900 MHz.

Politics dampens summit on Chernobyl's anniversary
Article Abstract:
Nuclear experts and environmentalists feel that the meeting of world leaders in Moscow, on the tenth anniversary of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster, is to support Boris Yeltsin in the Russian presidential elections rather than to discuss nuclear safety issues. The International Expert Task Force for the summit wants the countries of the former Soviet Union to close down their dangerous nuclear power stations. It also wants the G-7 states to set up a $10 billion fund to support non-nuclear energy sources.
