Validation of 22 Sodium to estimate food intake of bears
Article Abstract:
It is widely acknowledged that it is very difficult to estimate the amount of food eaten by wild animals. Feeding trials have been undertaken with wild bears, using the isotope 22 sodium to measure their food intake. The two grizzly bears and four American black bears were fed varying diets of salmon and deer before being injected with a sterile saline solution containing 22 sodium. The turnover of exchangeable sodium was measured and proved to be an accurate method of predicting food intake.

Dynamics of intertidal foraging by coastal brown bears in southwestern Alaska
Article Abstract:
The importance of clams to brown bears was investigated by testing the use of soft-shelled and Pacific-razor clams by brown bears in the Katmai National park. The importance of clamming and vegetative foraging was estimated using previously accumulated data.

Impacts of supplemental feeding on the nutritional ecology of black bears
Article Abstract:
Research is presented concerning the use of supplemental feeding to reduce the damage which is caused to managed conifer plantations by black bears in spring. The composition of the black bear's diet is discussed.
