A city by the sea: Early urban planning on Mexico's Pacific coast

Article Abstract:

The early urban planning of the Soconusco, which is a resource rich region, on Mexico's Pacific Coast, is studied. Its resources have drawn people for nearly 9,000 years when nomadic populations lived in small mobile bands and relied on the swamps for fish, clams and shrimp, while the majority has worked on the many Formative period sites that grew along the coast from at least 1600 B.C.

Roger Joussaume, Luc Laporte, and Chris Scarre are the archaeologists who have found a Neolithic communal sepulcher that no one had entered for 6,000 years near the village Prisse-la-Charriere. Details of the structural features of the tomb and the experiences faced by the three archaeologists while excavating the tomb are discussed.
