Archaeology and history in the Royal Acropolis, Copan, Honduras

Article Abstract:

The massive Mayan ruins in Copan, Honduras, have been extensively studied by archaeologists from the University of Pennsylvania Museum. Their efforts at Copan have allowed scholars to create an extensive record of how royal Mayan architecture from the Early Classic period (AD 400-650) was developed. Excavations at the Acropolis site in Copan have also led to the decipherment of dynastic texts that have improved understanding of how Mayan kings such as Yax K'uk' Mo' and his immediate successors established this royal center by the Copan river.

Uncovering Copan's earliest Royal tombs

Article Abstract:

Archaeologists from the University of Pennsylvania Museum have been able to recreate a detailed picture of Mayan life in the Early Classic period (AD 400-650) by investigating the Margarita and Hunal tombs found in the Acropolis site in Copan, Honduras. These royal tombs are elaborate funerary complexes that served as the focus of ritual activity for many years. It was in the Hunal Tomb, which is older than the larger Margarita Tomb, that the remains of the dynastic founder Yax K'uk Mo' were located.
