Genre

Article Abstract:

Folklorists need to authenticate their existence in order to claim an academic space: they have to construct their own terminologies. The problem of classification is one which folklorists tried to solve with the use of the term genre. However, it continues to be a contested ground because, like all other categories, it has a porous rather than solid boundaries. A broader base then was constructed for folklorists' categorizing purposes. Still, the challenges faced by folklorists continue up to the '90s and are made more complex by several impacting factors such as technology.
