Iraq alert: an extraordinary heritage is now at risk

Article Abstract:

Archaeologists are calling on world governments to adhere to the tenets of the 1954 Hague Convention on the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict, in light of the dangers to Iraq's ancient artifacts posed by the war. This includes the provision of guards at culturally sensitive sites and prohibitions against smuggling.

The specter of war: protecting Iraq's museum collections and archaeological sites in the event of an invasion

Article Abstract:

The article describes preparations in Iraq to protect historic sites and museum antiquities collections in the event of war. The article was written in December 2002, prior to the US initiation of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Concerns include damages caused by weaponry and looting.

Looted objects are robbed of meaning

Article Abstract:

With reference to the Euphronios krater vase, looted archaeological antiquities, though extremely important for information, are not felt to be as good as excavated objects because they lack contextual information.
