Perseus II

Article Abstract:

The Perseus Project is a CD-ROM collection of resources on Greek history and archaeology. The CD-ROM fails to mention controversies and omits important information. It also has errors in the indexes. Either a lot of disk space or continuous switching of CD-ROMs is required to view different images. A general discussion of the development of different areas, such as pottery and architecture, is not included. The idea of the CD-ROM is good but this version is not successful in being an encyclopedia resource on Greece.

Classics for the masses?

Article Abstract:

Popularizing classical images may lead to oversimplification. This process is more certain if teachers and scholars ignore it, regarding it as denigration. Resistance to responsible popularization will lead to fewer people understanding the ties between current culture's debt to antiquity. Classical studies will remain viable only if those concerned involve themselves in bringing accessible versions of their knowledge to a wider audience.

Visions of the Campagna

Article Abstract:

Joel Sternfeld's photographs of Italy's Campagna have been published in a book entitled 'Campagna Romana: The Countryside of Ancient Rome.' Sternfeld originally intended to produce a case study of environmental degradation, but he found that the region has an Arcadian, idyllic aspect along with its bleakness. The photographs show how the ancient and the modern coexist.
