The last Neandertals

Article Abstract:

Recent research at Zafarraya Cave near Malaga in southern Spain indicates that Neandertals lived millennia longer than estimated by scholars. There is also evidence to show that Neandertals may have existed at the same time as modern human beings in Western Europe as long as 10,000 years. A mandible was excavated which lacked a predominant chin and a space behind the molars which are characteristics of Neandertals. There is also an indication that modern humans who reached Western Europe came through the Middle East and Eastern Europe and not across the Straits of Gibraltar.

Neandertals of the Levant: a baby's burial sheds light on the development and behavior of the species

Article Abstract:

Remains of a Neandertal infant placed with a burial offering over 50,000 years ago have been found in Amud Cave near the Sea of Galilee in Israel, a find showing for the first time that the Neandertals conducted deliberate burials with offerings. Findings from the Levant also suggest that Neandertals were not precursors of modern humans, since modern human remains have been found that are earlier than the Neandertal remains. Neandertals and modern humans appear to have similar tools and burial practices, but are quite distinct biologically.

Fate of the Neandertals

Article Abstract:

An Upper Palaeolithic burial at the Lagar Velho site in Portugal is discussed, and the child buried theree had an anatomy that could only be explained as coming from a mixed Neanderthal-early modern human ancestry.Extensive interbreeding seems to have absorbed the Neanderthals into the modern human groups that started to take over Iberia about 30,000 years ago.
