Greece is continuing to demand the return of the Elgin Marbles, which it calls the Parthenon Marbles, from the British Museum. The British acquired them from Thomas Bruce, the 7th earl of Elgin, who removed them from the Parthenon in Athens while serving as Britain's ambassador to the Ottoman Empire between 1799 and 1802. Evidence that the British have poorly cared for the sculptures has embittered the controversy.

The lack of consensus of a 1999 conference on the condition of the Elgin Marbles after their 1937-38 cleaning by the British Museum is discussed. The British Museum seems to have concealed damage to the sculptures after an unauthorized cleaning with copper chisels and carborundum. The conference was hosted by the British Museum and featured experts from both theree and Greece.
