Tracking Ohio's Great Hopewell Road: aerial reconnaissance and infrared photography help scholars map a sacred roadway nearly 60 miles long

Article Abstract:

Traces have been found that indicate a 60-mile-long sacred roadway may have been built by the Hopewell across south-central Ohio. The Hopewell flourished between 100 B.C. and A.D. 400. The road would have linked earthworks in what is now Newark with similar earthworks in Chillicothe. Both sites have an octagonal enclosure connected to a circular embankment. Four traces of parallel lines have been identified along the projected route. Precedents for such a sacred road exist among other prehistoric cultures in the Americas.

'The Ancient Americas: Art from Sacred Landscapes' was an exhibition at the Art Institute of Chicago, ending Jan 1, 1993. The show portrayed Precolumbian perceptions of the harmony between man and nature, and featured pieces that represented the fundamental ideas and greatest artistic accomplishments of Amerindian civilizations. More than 300 objects, on loan from collections in the US, Mexico, Central America, and Europe, made up the display.
