Victorious gladiators

Article Abstract:

The recovery of frieze panels stolen from the graves of Roman gladiators near the Italian town of Fiano Romano, located to the north of Rome, is discussed. The insight provided by these frieze panels into ancient Roman life is described.

Saving a fabled sanctuary: conservators struggle to restore Justinian's Great Church in Istanbul

Article Abstract:

Hagia Sophia, the principal church of the Byzantine Empire, and the principal Ottoman mosque is described. This dome was added to UNESCO's World Heritage list in 1985, and its conservation work is in progress.
