A tale of two cities: designing independent daily newspapers in Bosnia is something to write home about

Article Abstract:

A non-profit government agency IREX/Pro Media brings media professionals from other countries into Bosnia-Herzegovina to act as consultants for struggling newspapers trying to make it as major independent dailies. US editors have been working with the Nezavisne Novine, a newspaper in the town of Banja Lukja, as design consultants. The Nezavisne Novine has a very small production room and is poorly lit. It does not have a graphics staff and there are no photographers.

Snapshot of a new camera: smile!

Article Abstract:

The newspaper 'Daily Camera' in Boulder, Colorado, was redesigned with the hope that it would gain greater readership. The project was led by Thad Keyes, managing editor of 'Camera' and Deborah Withey, Knight-Ridder design consultant. The redesign coincided with the rethinking content, front-end pagination system and resectioning of the paper. The overall goal of the project was to bring the paper into visual journalism.
