A Manhattan, NY, couple commissioned the services of designer Matthew Patrick Smyth to restore and redecorate their weekend retreat. The Tuxedo Park mansion, built in 1934 by Alfred Benziger, is a testimony to what a comfortable weekend house should be.

The spindle-backed or Windsor chair originated in England in the reign of Geroge I and was adopted in the colonies. Variations in design have evolved since the 18th century, including low and high backs and the addition of writing arms.
