David Rockwell: designer of the year

Article Abstract:

Pres of New York City's Rockwell Group David Rockwell is recognized as the Designer of the Year for 1998. The enthusiastic and approachable 41-year-old is seen as a trendsetter and pioneer in the new, technologically-inspired field of entertainment architecture. Rockwell leads a group of 180 architects, designers, artists, writers and modelmakers in accomplishing unique projects. Some of Rockwell's most popular projects include New York City's The Monkey Bar, which features signature 'olive' bar stools and the Nobu Restaurant, which presents a rural Japanese setting.

Monsanto Company leadership project

Article Abstract:

The design of the new centralized workplace for top management at Monsanto Co was conceptualized by Chmn and CEO Robert B. Shapiro in an effort to promote cultural change after the company divested the chemical division and started focusing on life sciences. The layout makes use of sustainable materials and incorporates energy-saving designs and materials. The design was executed by Holey Associates of San Francisco together with a team from Monsanto.

Museum shop

Article Abstract:

The Art Institute of Chicago renovated its museum shop in several stages to allow the continued operations at the shop while ensuring that it would be finished in time for the Monet exhibition in Jul 1995. Designer Don Powell used warm gray paint for the walls, installed flexible brackets and display shelves and lighted the area with ceiling beams. Merchandise bays were set into the walls while books were set prominently in the center.
