Article Abstract:

Editor Andrew Jaspan of the Observer, London, believes that redesigning is an important factor in the success of any newspaper. Radical redesigning of the Observer, involving graphics and color, created its image as a news and leisure magazine. Jaspan believes that a colorful front page in Sunday editions encourages a casual and impulsive buying behavior in British readers. He has won several British newspaper design awards for his assignments with Scotland on Sunday, The Scotsman, and the Observer.

The market competition in the newspaper industry in UK was heated up by the price cut on newspapers owned by Rupert Murdoch in his effort to destroy 'The Independent' and 'Telegraph.' Ten British newspapers are competing for supremacy, existence and readership despite cut-price subscription offers, emergence of high-quality glossy magazines and tabloid inserts. Despite all these, the local tabloid 'Horncastle News' maintains its quality by providing local news on the readers' interests.

San Diego/'97: adrift in a cloud of ego

Article Abstract:

The 1997 conference of the Society of Newspaper Design (SND) was held at the Hyatt Hotel in San Diego, CA. Several anecdotes are shared by a participant to help capture the frenetic pace of the event. Among the subjects the participant, a well-known design expert, ruminates upon are the debate over the Princess Diana's death, Poynter Font text type promotions and the presentation of the SND awards for best newspaper design.
