Article Abstract:

Furniture designer Jasper Morrison designed three of the top collections exhibited at the Milan show, particularly Three Sofas, for Cappellini. Morrison's work is becoming more utilitarian and he aims to focus on higher volume products for consumer markets. Morrison attributes his attention-seeking forms and use of bold colours to instinct. Curves are almost always used somewhere in his designs. Morrison is pleased that he can now design unsensational things as he no longer needs to get noticed, with products now designed that can be more utilitarian than just aesthetic.

New York states of mind

Article Abstract:

New York's recession has found many of its traditional graphic designers seeking new opportunities in order to survive in the 1990s. Graphic design house Pentagram's Colin Forbes says that the changing market has forced it to be flexible and to diversify into environmental graphics and retail design. In contrast, famous New York designer Milton Glaser feels that the 1990s are typecasting designers, while Tibor Kalman's M&Co has been involved in commercials, film titles and show openings and is able to undertake any project it wants to.
