From White House to our house

Article Abstract:

Christopher Hyland is enthusiastically leading the US government's campaign to boost the profile of design in the US. Hyland, who owns his own design business, is a flamboyant figure who is also shrewd and intelligent, and who knows how to get things done. Hyland's main task at present is to set up the Presidential Design Leadership Award, which as yet is the only concrete initiative to result from the government's interest in the design sector. The government currently has only a weak link with the design sector, although there are proposals for the creation of a US Design Council.

The exhibition 'Maps with Attitude' is shown at the Cooper-Hewitt National Museum of Design in New York, New York, US until Mar 7, 1993. Designed by Pentagram, it dispels the myth that all maps are strictly informative. It includes maps distorted to misrepresent the relative importance of certain countries to condition perception. It also includes videos, computers and stick charts. A computer generated map showing the depletion of the ozone layer is displayed by IBM.

The inner tube

Article Abstract:

The design of new passenger cars for the London Underground, being refurbished at an estimated cost of 440.5 million pounds sterling, is discussed. The refurbishment is necessary because of the survey on fire safety carried out after the 1988 disaster at King's Cross. The need for trains to have a different interiors on each line is questioned.
