When might a distressed firm share work? Evidence from the short-time compensation programme in France

Article Abstract:

Alternative methods of downward labour force adjustment include a short-time compensation (STC) programme, which is widely used in Belgium, France and Germany. The government provides a subsidy to encourage companies to alter their labour input composition, by reducing the length of the working week, and keeping on employees who might otherwise become redundant. An empirical analysis of the determining factors in the decision to select the STC method in France, is provided.
