Mightier than the Mouse?

Article Abstract:

Momenta's hybrid pentop computer combines a removable keyboard with a tablet to allow a more 'natural' graphic user interface for drawing. Manufacturers in the US are rushing to develop pocketable 'Personal Digital Assistants' costing under $500, although Momenta's product will not be mass-marketed due to its cost, battery life, weight and size. The computer has a built-in hard disk that can run Momenta's own operating environment, Windows for Pen or Microsoft's 'pencentric' system. Eden Group's Trigem Pen 386SX is one of the most capable and lightests products. It will run all pen operating systems, including Go's Penpoint. Go claims to have a 95-98% handwriting recognition accuracy rate. Wireless communication is seen as the key behind the future success of pen computing.

IDSA conference

Article Abstract:

The International Conference of the Industrual Designers Society of America was entitled 'Worldesign' and aimed at confronting issues such as global cultural diversity and environmentally responsible design. The recession meant that designers concentrated on reducing costs rather than environmental considerations. Exhibits included the Cannibal bicycle by Specialized Bicycles, sports clothing by Burton Snowboards, and a presentation on the definition of design by Esslinger.

A fair future for product design

Article Abstract:

The Domotechnica exhibition of product design held in Koln Messe between Feb 16 and 19, 1993, demonstrated that the industry was not moving forward. There were few differences between white goods and those that did exist were superficial. Designers will be forced to introduce some good new designs, however, to counter the decline in sales in these products.
