The effect of salts on steels and protective coatings

Article Abstract:

Nuclear powers plans in the UK tend to be located in coastal areas, and marine salts are likely to contaminate components. Other salts can also come into contact with components, including acidic chlorides from PVC fires. Stainless steel can be affected when it comes into contact with moist air, and carbon steel may already be contaminated before it is covered with an alkyd paint. Research has been carried out on these two areas by NNC.
