New track city

Article Abstract:

Manchester has reintroduced the tram to its streets, but the system, called Metrolink, is criticised as aesthetically incompatible with the cityscape and underfunded. The reasons for introducing the system are to make transport more environmentally friendly, to reduce traffic congestion and help attract the contract for the Olympic Games. Comprimises that were made during the implementation of the project include the inclusion of private funding and that it competes with other areas of transport because it is not fully integrated. The design for the stations was chosen for cost-efficiency, rather than superior design.

A history of ideas

Article Abstract:

The 20th Century gallery at the V&A displays both individually crafted products and mass-produced ones. Exhibits are selected according to 20-year chunks and those that have themes common throughout the 20th Century. This is in contrast to traditional chronological exhibiting and adresses the issue of the role of exhibitions and whether they should preserve or educate the public. The exhibition is situated at the former gallery of British Art and Design.

A greener gridlock

Article Abstract:

Petrol-driven cars are clearly unsuitable for use in major cities such as London, but inadequate public transport systems mean that cars are still essential. All leading European car manufacturers are therefore working on electric vehicles, which will overcome problems with pollution and narrow streets. However, tramways may be a better long term solution, as they can transport large numbers of people very quickly and can considerably reduce congestion.
