Article Abstract:

Philanthropist and art patron Marion Greene's century-old Saint Helena, CA, house needed a seismic upgrade following the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake. Greene then commissioned her son, architect Byron Kuth, and his partner, Elizabeth Ranieri, to strengthen and remodel her lovely sanctuary. Aside from reinforcing the house with plywood, steel and maple wood, Kuth and Ranieri also constructed a concrete 'tower' for a more private retreat for the owner. After three years of reconstruction, the Greene house is a model of architectural precision, craft and good proportions.

Residence

Article Abstract:

Marjorie Goldman restyled and added new character to a Mediterranean villa built in 1939 and owned by Richard Strafer and Holly Skolnick. Goldman infused the rooms with cabinets, chairs and tables by famous design masters such as Le Corbusier and Eileen Gray. She succeeded in enhancing the romantic ambience of the house by using neutral tones of ochre, umber and blue gray. The eclectic furniture accommodated the differing tastes of the owners with a fusion of modern and vintage pieces.

Residence

Article Abstract:

Sallie Trout's playful personality is well represented in the design of her 5,000-sq.ft. loft space, formerly owned by architect David Ming Li-Lowe. Trout divided the loft to include her office, a showroom, a workshop, and living space each designed in a unique way. All the furnitures in the loft were designed by Trout including the 'Burning Bed', the armchair with chicken claw feet, and the spike-legged tables.
