Seeing the big picture

Article Abstract:

The functions of assistant managing editors continue to diversify in accordance with the growing selectiveness of readers. They are being tasked with a wide range of functions such as layout design and staff management. Given the diversification of their functions, many assistant managers are calling for the de-specialization of their profession. They are urging for the adoption of an integrated approach to training prospective assistant managing editors. Some of their suggestions for training journalists to become integrated editors are discussed.

In the land of rainbows, the picture is usually white

Article Abstract:

Reality has frustrated the efforts of newspapers to bring marginalized groups into the mainstream. The National Association of Black Journalists examined four papers in areas with minority populations and found that their photographic coverage of minorities did not represent those minority's share of the populace. Two of the newspapers, the San Jose Mercury News and the Miami Herald, had a particularly small percentage once wire service photographs were deducted from the statistics.

Picture perfect: how a weekly newspaper turned dull grip 'n' grins into creative photographs

Article Abstract:

Creative photography has been used by the small community newspaper Maple Ridge News to make its pages more interesting and to complement stories. The newspaper's policy is to make photographs as important as the accompanying text in a bid to inform and entertain readers. The removal of team, trophy and presentation photos and their replacement with more interesting action shots has greatly improved the newspaper's readability.
