Small paper: big changes

Article Abstract:

Canadian morning newspaper 'Guelph Mercury' succeeded in creating a new design that involved discarding the old editorial and advertising structure to enhance its readability. The redesign initiative was borne out of the need to reinvent the paper in the face of growing competition in the Toronto, Ontario, market. Horizontal advertising stacks and non-designated pages were also introduced to make the daily content package compelling and interesting. Another significant change was the spread of local news over more pages.

Back to basics

Article Abstract:

Clean typography, effective use of white space and the need for contrast between competing page elements are the keys to good newspaper design. Newspapers must ensure that leading, tracking, horizontal scaling and hyphenation are correct while maintaining the right balance in the use of space. Contrast between elements, meanwhile, can be achieved by using a combination of horizontal and vertical news stories as well as narrow and wide heads with single and multiple decks.
