Smart simulation

Article Abstract:

Charles M. Salter Assoc's has built an acoustical facility that enables designers and architects to hear mockups of different acoustical conditions and gain better insights on the acoustical aspects of their designs. The San Francisco, CA-based acoustical consultant has recognized the designers' inadequate grasp of acoustical phenomena and created the facility to educate them on architectural acoustics. The 15-seat space is similar to a theater. Discussionson acoustical principles take place while actual and filtered sound recordings simulating different acoustical conditions substantiate the discussions.

How to get green

Article Abstract:

Washington-based environmental group Green Seal initiated the development of standards which would define the environmental impact of commercial products from raw material sourcing to manufacture, consumption and disposal. Products which conform to the standards would be allowed to sport a Green Seal logo for a fee. On the other hand, Scientific Certifications Systems(SCS) has evolved a system of verifying environmental claims. SCS has also offered a second form of certification where an environmental report card containing environmental-impact information is attached to the product.

Healthy office

Article Abstract:

Architect William McDonough believes that office designs should take indoor air quality into consideration. Hence, his designs favor open windows and a minimum of chemical-retaining materials such as upholstery, carpets and paints. The facilities of the Heinz Family Offices were designed with personalized adjustable fresh air outlets. In addition, soft surfaces were minimized with the use of hard materials such as wood and other ecologically sound materials.
